Not a lot to it, another early fix was to swap out the old and cracked gear selector cover and worn gear lever cover (the part with with the bristles). The new one wasn't quite as nicely built as the one I replaced, which may very well have been original, but it looks a lot nicer and isn't missing most of the bristles anymore.
Some day it would be neat to look into replacing the bristles with something softer, they tend to get "stuck" from being pushed aside in P and D positions so much.
