Sadly, most states require a front license plate. When I got the car, the plate was screwed directly into the mounting holes in the bumper and came close to falling off on the way into Brooklyn one day. I lived dangerously without it for a bit, but got a ticket while I was parked on the street. I picked up a tow hook plate holder, screwed it in and took a photo to appeal the ticket, then took it back off again. The ticket was dismissed, and I have the plate in the back seat to throw on if I'm going to park on the street or anyone gives me grief about it.
